Every morning at our counter in Cruz Bay, the same three questions come across the deli case: which beach today, is it going to blow out by lunch, and what sandwich should we take. This is our answer, written for the way people actually spend a day on St. John — car, cooler, kids, maybe a snorkel, definitely a nap.
St. John's beaches aren't interchangeable. Wind shifts, current runs, shade disappears at eleven, and the wrong sandwich in the wrong cooler becomes lunch for the iguanas. We built this rundown around the beaches we send people to most, ranked by how well they hold a proper picnic.
The best beach on St. John is the one you can actually get a table of shade at by 10:30 a.m. Everything else is a coin toss with the trade winds.
Trunk Bay: the postcard, and how to actually enjoy it
Trunk Bay is the National Park's cover shot for a reason — that curve of white sand and the underwater snorkel trail past Trunk Cay show up in every travel magazine from November to April. It's also the only North Shore beach with an entrance fee (bring the National Park pass or cash), lifeguards, showers, and a proper snack bar. Which means: crowded by 10 a.m., empty again by 3.
Best sandwich for Trunk: The Norman. It's wrapped tight, holds cold, and doesn't drip when you eat it one-handed under a sea grape. Skip anything with a hot egg — the ferry over from the parking lot and the walk down the stairs will finish it before you do.
Maho Bay: the flattest water, the softest day
Maho is where locals bring their in-laws. Turtles graze the sea grass fifteen feet offshore, the water rarely gets above thigh-deep for the first forty yards, and the sand is soft enough to bury a cooler in. Shade is scarce — bring an umbrella or plant early under the palms at the north end.
- Parking: roadside along North Shore Road. Arrive by 9:30 in season.
- Best for: families, snorkelers, sea turtle sightings, low-wind days.
- Skip when: any northerly swell is on — Maho gets stirred and cloudy.
- Sandwich pick: The Sammy Hammy or a build-your-own with pesto — holds flat, no drip.
Hawksnest: fast in, fast out
Hawksnest is the closest real beach to Cruz Bay — ten minutes from the deli. It's the pick when you've got a late-morning ferry and only a two-hour window. Three small crescents separated by rock, decent shade under the sea grape trees, and a reef close enough to snorkel without fins.
If you're grabbing lunch on the way, order at Clover ahead of time — Hawksnest days are the exact scenario the pre-order line was built for.
Salt Pond Bay: the reward for driving to Coral Bay
Salt Pond sits on the south side, past Coral Bay, at the end of a fifteen-minute walk down from the parking lot. That walk is the price of entry, and it's why the beach stays quiet even in high season. Snorkel to Booby Rock on the south end. Hike Ram Head from the same trailhead if you've got the legs.
Pack heavy. There's no snack bar, no shower, no shade past 1 p.m. Our full picnic build for Salt Pond is two sandwiches, a bag of chips, two sides that hold cold (the pasta salad and the slaw), and double the water you think you need.
Little Lameshur: for the day you want no one else there
Down a rough dirt road that eats rental cars for breakfast. Worth every rattle. Little Lameshur has no facilities, minimal shade, and often no other humans. It's also the trailhead for the historic Reef Bay Trail, which we cover in Chapter 02.
Oppenheimer / Gibney: the sleeper
Small, calm, protected — Oppenheimer sits between Hawksnest and Trunk with almost no signage on purpose. Locals' pick for a half-day with a book. Great for the under-five crowd. Terrible for anyone who needs a bathroom.
What sandwich survives the swim
The rule is simple: nothing hot, nothing that will weep. Vinaigrettes are fine; mayo needs to stay in the cooler. Bread matters more than the meat — a sturdy ciabatta beats a soft roll every time on a two-hour beach day.
- The Norman — cold, sturdy, holds four hours in a cooler.
